There are some names like “Zoulias” who represent old Athens and its divas that constituted a demanding, elite clientele. Zoulias remains classic, even now that we are 25 years after his original debut. Last night I really enjoyed Vassilis Zoulias’ fashion show in Athens. It had a magnificent 50’s flavor and aura of old New York. Most of the wonderfully tailored dresses were made of high quality silk. I was stunned at the vivid colors I saw, especially an almost fluorescent fuchsia and a luminous turquoise. I also liked the florals, either in explosive colors or in more conservative ones. There were two styles to defend at that show; the lady-like chic and the 50’s pin up girl. Some of them reminded me of Audrey Hepburn in the glorious 60’s movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. But the introduction to the show was a short video with Billie Holiday singing “Love for Sale”, a jazz sound from the 30’s that Cole Porter wrote for the musical “The New Yorkers”. That kind of thing, though charming, seemed confusing, for an audience being prepared to see 30’s fashion. 34-year-old Kylie Bax, top model who has done many covers for international magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire and Sports Illustrated, and is married to the Greek fashion photographer Spiros Poros, was Zoulias’ special guest. Most of the models were good choices and they were further helped by the styling.
