Modern elegance is everything in our busy times and Marcel Ostertag offered us on the runway an array of options rendered in cool shades, neutrals, and metallics that were accented with smartly placed frills. As expressed in the style notes he was led by his own “revolution” and driven by ongoing change. There was fluidity and motion in the looks. The result was serene and wearable. Fur outerwear options completed some of the looks. He is definitely setting up an easy-to-wear urban wardrobe sprinkled with luxe details.
Wind and low temperatures didn’t allow me to attend the Elizabeth Kennedy show at Pier59 Studios, yet they all shared that it was a really interesting and impressive show. Next time hopefully!
The revolutionary spirit and social commentary was kept through the day and through the fashion week us people in the US and all over the world as experiencing overwhelming changes. Gypsy Sport refugee camp runway installation and street music set was stressing the whole issue of people living on the streets, without a real home and away from their homelands. The designer said that his trips to Paris, Mexico, and his reality in L.A. were extremely revealing about the universal nature of this problem. Colors and motifs in his collection had an ‘urban nomad’ feel. Artisanal details and oversized silhouettes and styled with dreadlocks, makeup, and cool accessories.
Custo Barcelona was by far one of my favorites, speaking of modern glamour, club kids, positive energy and upbeat mood. He is specializing in patchwork, color-blocking and mixed media, and he never lets his audience down. Asymmetries, sequins, textures, accessories (loved the sparkly high-heel booties and men’s glittered brogues) were all stunning and sophisticated. It’s what men and women would wear today, if Studio54 was still alive!
Vivienne Hu also combined her runway show with a live music set and rock vibes, yet the collection was what we call timeless wardrobe basics, including a fur-trim hooded puffer coat, a classic evening gown, workday ensembles, military-inspired coat and all kinds of day-to-evening winter essentials. Functional details are meant to serve busy ladies wishing to stay put-together while going from the office to the bar.
Namilia was referencing super-heroes, space-age creatures and a rebellious attitude that most hipsters have today. Metallics, puffer wings, slogans, and bold hues, made for a fun fashion show for all hipsters to share. There were supercar race-inspired elements, camo details, and a silver puffer evening gown among other fashionable mixes! That’s certainly lots of fun and function!
