I came across these little precious miracles through Net-a-Porter.com and instantly placed my Little New York set of 5 hand-painted mouth-blown glass baubles into my wishlist. But during my recent trip to London, I discovered their Fortnum & Mason selling point, where a great part of their adorable collection stands out from the rest of the equally dazzling decorations in a floor full of expensive Christmas tree ornaments and other festive items. They are elegant, cute, sophisticated and full of cultural/sight-seeing references from all over the world.
I met the designer himself and his wife – Michael Peterson and Zaneta – and he offered to sign my yellow cab ornament! I was so happy to chat with him and discover that he founded his very genuine artsy and fashion-inclined business at the outskirts of London back in 2001. His frequently updated collection consists of baubles designed in England and manufactured by skilled craftsmen in a Polish factory with which they have family connections.
He placed my own baubles inside bubble wrap sleeves and all of them carefully packaged in a signature wooden box, as each one of his baubles are always sent to customers. It was easy for me to put them in my luggage safely and later find them in perfect condition. They gave my tree a playful luxe flair which I’ll try to maintain, collecting more of these incredible pieces. Michael Peterson is a cosmopolitan person with lots of travels and references along the way. He meticulously designs every new piece and overlooks the whole process. He said that he has collaborated with Sir Paul Smith and I later found out that he has even designed baubles for Saint Paul ‘s Cathedral!
Each design goes through several stages from a painstaking first clay model to the perfectly finished glittering glass bauble. Michael envisions even more collaborations with the fashion industry and we’ll definitely stay tuned for more of his upcoming projects. His witty and pretty designs are collector’s items and my own ones are those inaugurating my latest obsession! My visit to Fortnum & Mason was worth it, as I soon realized that my baubles were not Net-a-Porter-branded and the same applies to the box (Net-a-Porter’s edition had a black branded box and their logo on the yellow cab bauble).
