At last, 2010 will be the year in which Luella Bartley is going to release her book “Luella’s Guide to English Style”. Publication of the guide was postponed last year due to Luella’s other obligations. Her wish now is to present it at the London Fashion Week in September. As she explained for her Fourth Estate publication “It’s not going to be just a book about fashion. It’s a work of social anthropology.” We would add that it’s a celebration of English style. In this book the top designer answers questions such as: “What makes English girls the coolest in the world?” and “What is the English style which girls around the world try to emulate?” Luella Bartley, who was named in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list, received her MBE from the Queen and was crowned Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards last autumn, is going to describe what makes English girls just a little bit special. The book’s first part is dedicated to the clothes, as well as the street style, and the second to the icons – from Kate Moss to The Duchess of Devonshire. She also talks about style tribes vying for the English girl’s allegiance, the social rituals she undergoes – from surfing in Cornwall to clubbing in Berlin – and the status symbols she marks herself out with. The book includes for that matter a lot of photographs, drawings, and diagrams. Her background as a writer, editor on Vogue and owner of a successful label helped her a lot in this project. Luella’s label, though it felt strongly the crisis’ burden, may possibly be revived due to the increased publicity that will be brought by this book.
