Experimental but serious, Konstantinos Mitrovgenis’ collection, presented this season at AXDW, is characteristic of the designer’s freedom of expression and playful approach to fashion. Although most looks were costume-like, they could be easily transformed into wearable ones, equally impressive and avant-garde. His work reveals the spontaneity and enthusiasm of an ex-model and fashion student who gradually matures on the catwalk, presenting edgy but sophisticated pieces for daring people. Among the show’s highlights we could distinguish the zipper-assembled and convertible pieces, the 3-D “bite me-love me” dress, the Chinese lantern dress and the parachute dress. There was a lot of interaction among the models and the designer who appeared on stage in order to fix the parachute dress with a few moves. Each style had its own intense visual impact combining ethnic and futuristic elements, technology and pop art images. We were left speechless with what we saw and overall it was an uplifting, deeply artistic show. In times of crisis and market-imposed “basics,” we really need designers who still pay less attention to the commercial aspect of fashion and more to the artistic one.
