“Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” is the title of a tribute exhibition (May 4 to July 31, 2011) which is going to take place at the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art this Spring. The retrospective will include the designer’s work at his own couture house until his tragic death, as well as his previous work at Givenchy. The archives of his biblical trip into the world of fashion will be further enriched by the pieces he designed for his faithful fans and friends, Daphne Guinness and Isabella Blow. In this dark, sensitive mood, the Annual Met Gala which happens on May 2 will be quite different. The über-designer and “showman” casts his inspirational shadow on living fashion protagonists, raising constantly a-list consumers’, fashionistas’ and fashion editors’ expectations. McQueen is the new norm. Who dares to compare with?
