Since last season’s successful NYFW debut of Taoray Wang, she’s been among my favorite designers, although I feel like a late adopter of her creative allure. Tao Wang is already one of China’s most celebrated, talented and accomplished designers. To some Tao is seen as an aesthetic feminist, she has pioneered a vast and exhilarating change in women’s fashion first in China and now internationally with the launch of her namesake brand Taoray Wang.
Now ready to conquer NYC with her highly sophisticated and imaginative designs, Tao presents another collection of exquisite beauty, innovation and grace. Her FW15 show at the New York Fashion week was an ode to architecture, sacred shapes, progress and female power. Plus she is about to open her first NYC flagship boutique expected by early 2016!
Tao left China as a teenager with her family and moved to Japan. It was in Japan that she honed her fashion craft and entered the prestigious Tokyo Modo, majored in design and graduated with honors. Upon graduating she moved to London, England where she met her husband with who she has two children.
In 2002 Tao Wang was hired as the Managing and Creative Director of Broadcast. Under her direction the company would grow to 2.3 Billion USD in China. An entire nation watched the birth of one of China’s most exciting and interesting business women, Tao Wang.
Over the decade Tao found herself grow from an aspiring designer to one of Asia’s most successful female entrepreneurs. She set out to create a brand that would serve international women like her!
Her latest sources of inspiration include Bauhaus and the important work of Zaha Hadid translated into geometrical motifs and silhouettes; shapes such as squares, circles, and lines. She incorporates in her wintery palette lots of grey (checked, blended, slate, hematite, early morning grey) as well as ivory, virgin rose, burgundy, milk white, khaki, and celery green. And she’s using warm, cozy textiles such as Colombo pure cashmere, virgin wool, cashmere & wool blends, Vasino coated wool, Japanese Toray ultra suede, and fur (fox & raccoon).
I loved the oversized lapels and roomy coats, the funky big polka dots, the pastel and shades-of-grey layered looks, the cowl-neck sweaters, the impeccable tailoring of her dresses and suits, the camo motif on fur, and the various styles of pants in her collection. They definitely cover a wide range of clients, from the edgy fashionista or busy jetsetter, to ladies bound to luxe classics with a twist!
The outfits were complemented with simple hairstyles by Rodney Cutler and minimalist makeup by MAC Cosmetic s. It’s usually hard to mix hip with classic, but Tao made it look effortless and magical!
